Chapter 26
The suite phone rang as Ianto came out of the bathroom, a towel round his waist, another in his hands as he rubbed at his hair, tiny droplets of water rolling down his chest and back. He crossed the room to pick up the handset, chuckling at Jack’s indignant spluttering as he was left alone.
“Mr Jones?” The calm, cultured Welsh tones of the duty manager sounded on the other end, “There’s a Dr Milligan and a Dr Jones here to see you and Captain Harkness...”
Ianto grinned, they’d made it! “Thank you, Alun, would you ask them to come up..?”
“Certainly, sir. Can I send anything...coffee? pastries?” Ianto chuckled, Jack’s entertaining foibles were well known! “I’ll do coffee myself...but an assortment of Jack’s favourites would be nice...thank you...”
Ianto hung up and headed back to the bathroom. Jack had abandoned the shower now as he’d had no-one to play with and was drying himself. He looked up, grinned delightedly and reached for the younger man, folding him into his arms and kissing him thoroughly, their towels falling to the floor...
“Jack...” Ianto mumbled against his Captain’s mouth and attempted to wriggle out of his hold.
“What?”
“Martha and Tom are on their way up...”
“Oh! Damn...I was just getting started..!” he pressed light kisses down the side of Ianto’s neck, smirking as the Welshman melted against him, feeling the shudders eddying through his body, obvious signs of interest pressing against his thigh... “Leave it to me...” Jack quickly turned the shower back on, grabbed a towel from the floor, wrapping it around himself in case he wasn’t quick enough and ran to the door of the suite, throwing it wide open, before diving back into the bathroom.
Moments later they heard the lift doors ping open and footsteps approached, the sound of a nightingale that was Martha Jones talking excitedly about the evening to come... The footsteps stopped at the door followed by the rap of knuckles on wood... “Anyone home..? Jack? Ianto?”
Jack pressed a finger to Ianto’s lips...his deliciously pink, kiss-swollen lips... Jack was momentarily distracted as he contemplated the different places those lips had kissed that afternoon...
“Jack? Ianto?”
Jack shouted through the door. “Hi guys, you caught us in the shower...we’re running a bit late... Do you want to go and check out the roof garden – we’ll be up in a minute...”
A brief silence followed, then sounds of giggling and footsteps went past the door, heading towards the staircase... Jack grinned lecherously at Ianto, the pair of them jumping as Martha’s amused voice came through the closed door, “...just don’t think you can stay in there shagging all night! Oh, and Ianto – it had better be your best coffee!” Martha’s footsteps faded away as she joined her husband up on the roof.
Jack pulled Ianto back into his arms and kissed him passionately, his tongue sliding into the Welshman’s mouth where it explored the familiar territory, tiny sighs of pleasure escaping the young man as he lost himself in the feel of his Captain’s lips against his own. He thrust his body against the older man, desire mounting as they pressed together in the steam-filled room. Breaking apart to draw breath, Jack ran his tongue down the side of Ianto’s neck, pausing to graze his teeth against his skin where neck met shoulder, drawing a gasp of mixed pleasure and pain from the young man, before trailing down his chest where he sought out his aroused nipples...teasing them playfully...
Ianto’s head arched back, his eyes closed and his lips parted, his breath becoming a series of pants as Jack’s tongue trailed lower and lower until... Ianto gasped and moaned as he was engulfed in Jack’s mouth, tongue and teeth at their most wicked, bringing him to the edge within minutes and he groaned his release, his body shuddering through wave after wave of delicious pleasure.
Jack released him when his shudders had stopped, sliding back up his body to crush their mouths together, Ianto tasting himself on the older man’s tongue as he plundered his mouth, hands threading through his damp hair, passionate and possessive...and perfect... Regretfully, they pulled apart and wrapped towels round their waists before scampering across to the bedroom to pull on their clothes – dark jeans and a red silk shirt for Ianto, black trousers and a black and white shirt for Jack... They looked at their reflections in the mirror and grinned – they looked relaxed and happy with an unmistakable ‘just-shagged’ glow – no less than Martha would expect!
Pressing a last kiss on Jack’s lips, Ianto went to sort out the coffee, selecting Martha’s favourite blend for everyone, while Jack went up onto the roof to join them. It was a glorious summer’s evening, the sun sliding lower in the sky but it still held a gentle warmth and a golden light that sparkled off the sea.
Martha flung herself into Jack’s arms and planted a kiss on his cheek. “You look fantastically happy!” she said, smiling, “...and totally gorgeous!”
Jack grinned and spun her round. “I am!” he chuckled, “...gorgeous, that is!” He sent gentle words of love to Ianto’s head, knowing he was following the conversation from the kitchen. He set Martha back down on her feet and released her, holding his hand out towards Tom who shook it warmly.
“Good to see you again...this looks great...” Tom waved his hand at the roof garden, decorated with the large pictures of the Doctor and Mollie and a few other random shots from the team’s mobiles from their lunch at Maisie’s, pillar candles and windchimes added to the relaxing atmosphere. The large round table was laid simply, the centrepiece a plain grey slate cube...
Jack glanced at his watch. It was just gone six so they had about an hour before the rest of the team arrived. He spun round as Ianto emerged from the suite below, a tray of coffee and assorted pastries balanced in his hands. Jack dragged another couple of loungers over to one of the garden tables as the Welshman set the tray down, handing mugs round.
“Dig in,” he said, shaking Tom’s hand and leaning down to press a light kiss to Martha’s forehead. “Your dress matches my shirt...” grinning as she giggled.
“I do seem to remember a conversation where we decided that red is definitely our colour...” She arched an eyebrow in unspoken question. Ianto nodded, grinning, and sat down on a lounger next to Jack, who immediately pressed for a kiss, cupping his face lovingly as their lips met.
“God, Jack, put him down!” Martha’s voice held fond amusement, “haven’t you done enough of that..!”
Jack pulled Ianto closer and deepened the kiss, sliding his tongue into the young man’s mouth where it mapped the contours, tiny sighs escaping his Welshman as he gave himself to the moment.
“Never! I could kiss him forever and it still wouldn’t be enough” he declared when they broke apart, breathless.
Ianto blushed and buried his head in Jack’s shoulder, Martha’s gentle chuckles combined with her knowledge of his plan for later that evening, deepening the pink hues on his cheeks. She gave him a playful punch on the arm and he looked up, grinning, not needing telepathy to know exactly what she was thinking!
He leant back against Jack, watching as he sank his teeth into a sticky apple Danish, his face going into raptures, “Mmnnn, wuvly!” he mumbled through his mouthful. Ianto rolled his eyes and reached for a pecan and walnut slice, one of his favourites. The four friends sat and munched in comfortable silence as the sun continued its elegant slide down towards the horizon.
The calm was broken with the insistent beeping of Jack’s wrist strap and he jumped up checking the readings. “Rift activity in Penarth,” as he pulled his phone out to call Gwen. He was scrolling for the number when the phone rang.
“Lois...” he nodded briefly, dropping a hand to Ianto’s shoulder and squeezing gently. “Ok, we’ll see you there shortly...” He hung up and looked apologetically at Tom and Martha. “Seems to be becoming a habit leaving you alone! We got a rift alert on the shore at Penarth – Lois says it doesn’t appear to be anything major, but Gwen’s at home with Mollie [Rhys isn’t home from work yet] so I said we’d go over and check it out...d’you mind?” he looked at Ianto anxiously, “I don’t want to spoil the evening...”
Ianto stood up, moving swiftly towards the stairs. “C’mon then!” he grinned, “I’ll get the hero coat!” scampering down the stairs as Jack followed him, a muffled “won’t be long...” as they left the suite in full flight.
Tom got up from his lounger and joined his wife on hers, pulling her in for a tender kiss. Martha smiled as they broke apart, “...nothing changes here, does it – still madness!”
“Just a normal Saturday night in A & E...swap the drunks for weevils and there’s practically no difference..!” as he cupped her face softly before claiming her lips once more and they sank into the embrace under the gentle warmth of the early evening sun.
Jack and Ianto were just outside Penarth, following the directions from the hand-held scanner Ianto had dug out of the glove box of his car, “...left at the end and follow the road...that should take us down to the shore...watch out it’s a tight turn!” he gasped and hung on to the seat as the tyres screeched in protest. Jack muttered under his breath and lifted off the accelerator momentarily to allow the car to re-establish grip on the tarmac. He glanced sideways at Ianto, waiting for the complaint, but none came, just a soft press of mind against mind...love you he sent, smiling, before returning his concentration to the road.
Pulling up on a stretch of sandy scrubland they jumped out of the car and swung the scanner round. “Here...” Ianto headed down towards the sea, Jack followed, his coat billowing in the stiff sea breeze. The crunch of tyres had them turning round and they waited for Lois to catch them up.
“It’s not moved for the past ten minutes...” she said, breathlessly, panting from the sprint across the sand with her heavy case.
They followed the signal further down the beach until they caught sight of a dark mass just on the edge of the sea, the waves crashing over the still form. Jack broke into a run and splashed into the shallows, Ianto just behind him, a brief the salt water’s gonna ruin these shoes! streaming unbidden across his mind. He felt Jack’s answering chuckle and grinned, glancing down at the prone creature.
It was roughly the size of a man and lizard-like in appearance, black hide glistening in the water. Its eyes were closed and its jaw hung open...
Jack nudged it with his boot, “Poor thing...” he grimaced, “its dead...but that’s not surprising – the shock of being pulled through the rift would’ve done that. He stepped back out of reach of the surf to join Lois on dry sand, tugging Ianto back with him. “It’s a Squamatae...primative, non-violent...but don’t touch it without gloves – its skin is an irritant, won’t do you any permanent damage, but it’ll give you a nasty rash that itches like hell...something a female of their species failed to mention some time back...”
Lois laughed, “I never know whether to believe half your stories...” she reached into the case to pull out three pairs of tough gloves and a body bag.
Ianto took the gloves she held out and marched back into the gentle waves, cutting off Jack’s answering laugh abruptly. He turned his back on his Captain and started dragging the heavy body out of the sea, channeling his annoyance into extra strength and adrenaline – quite useful in the present circumstances.
Jack splashed in beside him and grabbed the tail, tugging hard and they made slow but sure progress up the beach to where Lois had laid out the body bag. Working efficiently, the creature was bagged and heaved over Jack’s shoulder in under twenty minutes.
“I’ll take it back to the SUV, you two go and make sure we haven’t had an audience up there...” he gestured towards the back of the rather nice looking homes whose gardens led down onto the beach. “Have you got retcon?”
“Of course she’s got retcon,“ Ianto snapped, turning on his heels and stomping up the beach towards the bungalows, “...we all carry it all the time...”
“Oops...looks like I upset him...” Jack shrugged lightly, or as lightly as was possible with a twelve stone alien on his shoulders. He sighed, “...see you shortly...” and he started back towards where they’d parked the vehicles. “Yan..?” he sent softly, “I’m sorry...it was a very long time ago...I was still mortal then...my Time Agency days...” he sent a gentle cheek to cheek rub, “...and you’re much more attractive than any black lizard creature I’ve ever met...”
Ianto laughed unwillingly, startling Lois who was trotting quietly beside him trying to work out what she could say that wouldn’t rile the young Welshman. “You’re incorrigible..!” he sent back, flashing a smile at a relieved Lois, who grinned back at him as they began the short climb towards the first of the gardens.
“Yeah, but you love me...” Jack panted a little as the beach sloped upwards and the bulk on his shoulder ground into the bone.
“Yeah...I do...” Ianto conceded, “but you are so going to share some of those memories with me so I know just what you did get up to in those days...” he sent a gentle shove, “...now get back to work!”
“Yes, sir!” Jack concentrated on the last few feet of sand and was soon heaving the dead weight into the boot, slamming it closed with relief. He leant on the side of the car and waited for the others to return.
Ianto and Lois had made it into the first garden. It looked a little overgrown, but was a glorious stretch of grass and tasteful shrubs and borders leading up to an impressive looking low bungalow. It seemed deserted. Lois tapped her PDA as Ianto swung the scanner round. “No life signs within a mile – except us and Jack of course. Nobody home – that’s a result! Nice places though...”
Lois peered at her screen. The owners of this one are away in the States for a month on holiday – that would explain the garden...” Ianto nodded agreement, “the one next door is empty – it’s up for sale, and the last one next door to that is owned by an entertainer who’s currently filming up in Scotland, him and his partner and their dogs seem to come and go between several houses around the country...nice work if you can get it!” She closed the programme down. “Let’s get back – I’m hungry and I still need to get changed before we come round to you...” She led the way down the path that ran along the back of the gardens.
Ianto took a lingering look around. This was a really nice place...a sudden thought occurring to him brought a huge grin to his face... “Yan..?” Jack had felt his delight... He hurried after Lois, “...tell you when we get back, cariad...”
They scrambled back into their respective vehicles, Lois heading back to the hub with strict instructions to dump lizardman straight in the morgue and get ready for dinner tout de suite! She’d felt like saluting, but had settled for a grin.
Jack slid into the driving seat and looked at Ianto expectantly. “Ok, what’s got you all excited..? ...other than me, of course..!” he leered at the young man affectionately and dropped a hand on his knee before sliding it up his thigh, stroking suggestively...
Ianto rolled his eyes and removed the hand, placing it carefully back on the steering wheel. “I know we haven’t talked about where we’re going to live...I mean, we’ve got my little flat and the hub...”
“Ok, that’s unexpected!” Jack was surprised, and if he was honest, he didn’t actually care where they lived as long as it had Ianto in it...he shared the thought...
“One of those bungalows was empty – it’s up for sale and it’s beautifully secluded...it would make a perfect retreat, especially as you’re planning on making sure everyone gets proper time off...we’d still keep the flat and we tend to spend most of our time at the hub anyway...” his thoughts trailed off uncertainly, “What do you think?”
“If you want it sweetheart, we’ll have it...we’ll sort it out tomorrow...”
“What, just like that? You don’t want to see it first?”
“I told you, home for me is wherever you are...besides...” he grinned seductively, “...all those new rooms to christen!”
Ianto laughed and grabbed Jack’s hand, replacing it on his upper thigh, Jack squeezing gently before putting it back on the wheel. “You know...” he said thoughtfully as he pulled into the lower level of the hotel car park, “...if the back garden goes down onto the beach, we could put in a jetty - moor the Sea Queen there and speedboat to work...we’ve got the mooring in the bay...” His face lit up...he adored their speedboat, technically, their second speedboat as the first Sea Queen had been sacrificed to provide a funeral pyre for a giant jellyfish... “Love the idea...tomorrow, definitely...” He turned the engine off and leant across to press a kiss on Ianto’s mouth, lips parting as their tongues danced lazily and they reached for each other as the kiss deepened.
They broke apart and climbed out of the car, continuing their steamy kiss in the elevator until they were joined by Donna and the Doctor when the lift stopped at the lobby. “Don’t mind me!” Donna laughed, “I’m happy to watch!”
Ianto blushed and buried his face in Jack’s neck, his Captain tipping his face up to claim his lips in a soft and gentle kiss that he was unable to resist and he wound his arms around the older man’s neck, pressing against him as he was kissed into oblivion.
Donna nudged the Doctor who was gazing steadfastly at his feet, “Oi Space boy, have you seen this?”
“Oh, yes, frequently, repeatedly...and more..!”
Donna glared at him, “...and you never told me?”
The Doctor grinned at her, “Believe me...after a while you tend to filter it out... Peter said that and I must admit I didn’t believe him, but it’s true, you stop noticing after a while...but you’re missing the show..!”
“Oh! Yeah..!” She swung round and grinned widely as the two men kissed...breaking apart when the elevator doors pinged open on the top floor. The Doctor strolled out, hands in his pockets, Donna, Jack and Ianto following, the three chuckling. They entered the suite to find Gwen, Rhys, Martha and Tom chatting. The Doctor squawked as Martha flung herself into his arms, squeezing him tightly, as everyone said their hellos.
Jack and Ianto headed towards the bedroom as Martha laughed, “...not again, surely!”
They swung round, Jack laughing as Ianto helped him off with his coat, “nah, not this time – we had to retrieve a dead alien from the sea so we need to get out of these wet trousers...you can watch if you like!”
Martha giggled, “Not necessary, I assure you! One pair of female eyes is quite enough to make sure you behave!”
Jack glanced at Gwen, “Is she asleep or do I get to cuddle?”
“I think she’s probably asleep by now, but you can check...”
Ianto crept in and peered into the travel cot. Mollie was sound asleep in her cute pink babygro, her little fingers clutched possessively around a tiny Welsh dragon beanie toy. “Sshh!” he said as Jack joined him, “...she’s soundo!”
They moved quietly to the wardrobe where Ianto hung Jack’s coat up and pulled out two dry pairs of trousers, socks and shoes, slipping out of the wet ones and into the dry ones swiftly, pausing only to snatch a quick kiss before rejoining their friends outside.
Ianto rang down to the kitchen to update them on dinner requirements, asking them to delay for another fifteen minutes before serving the starters. Next, he opened some more bottles of wine and made sure everyone had a drink, finally returning to his Captain’s side to slide an arm around his waist. Jack pulled him closer and pressed a light kiss to his lips. “Everything ok?”
“Yep, dinner will be up shortly, and hopefully...oh, perfect timing, Lois and Peter are here now...” He released Jack and went to greet the new arrivals, taking their jackets through to the bedroom and leaving Jack to sort their drinks out.
“Shall we go upstairs then?” Jack led the way and they all laughed loudly at the Doctor’s delighted expression when he saw the photos of himself.
The Timelord hopped from one picture to the next, beaming at them and around at his friends. “Can I take them with me?” he asked “...a link to you all while we’re far away...”
“If we all sit down...dinner’s just arrived and we’ve got something else for you to take as well...” Jack herded them towards the table. Once they were sat around it, Jack nodded to Ianto who dug the key out of his pocket and handed it to Lois. “We saw those photos and decided that it would be nice to have a lasting image of that to take with you, something to remember us by...so young Lois here created you...”
He nodded and Lois pressed the button twice, the holographic image of the Doctor and Mollie, both sound asleep hovering over the table... Cheers and applause rang out and the Doctor found he had tears in his eyes... He stood up, a hush falling over the gathering of friends who gazed at him expectantly. “I’m not good at speeches...” he began as Donna whispered very loudly, “...don’t listen to him – can’t usually get him to shut up!” all faces except the Timelord’s breaking into a smile.
“As I was saying before I was interrupted..! I don’t do long goodbyes or thank you’s, but I just have to say that I have never, in all my nine hundred years, met such a wonderful group of people and you’re all welcome in my TARDIS anytime...” he bowed at the applause and sat down, surreptitiously wiping away a tear as he sent a simple, but meaningful thank you to the two men he’d spent an eventful week with, the bonds they’d created would endure over time, space and even regeneration...
“Right, you lot, dinner is served and I think a toast is in order...” they all picked up their glasses, “...to us all and the bonds of eternal friendship...” They clinked glasses and got down to the serious business of munching their way through the delicious starters, lively conversation reverberating around the table. As they finished the main course, Jack leant back and surveyed his team and his friends, relaxed and animated, these moments of down time were few and far between, especially with them all together and he cherished them, committing the images to his memory for future times when he knew they would be gone and he would be going on alone...
His eyes sought out his Welshman who was leant down between Donna and the Doctor, an arm draped along the back of each of their chairs, his head thrown back as he laughed...he was beautiful, so completely beautiful... His heart leapt as Ianto looked towards him and their eyes met, the exchange was pure emotion and it radiated through his entire being...he wouldn’t be alone for a very long time to come yet...
Ianto whispered in Martha’s ear and headed towards the stairs, Martha giggled and hugged herself, leaving Jack wondering what she was up to. He got up, intending to follow Ianto downstairs to catch a few moments alone with him, only to be thwarted by Donna. It took him over five minutes to answer Donna’s question to her satisfaction as he was headed towards the stairs only to be beaten to them by Gwen going down to check on Mollie. Jack huffed and gave up, sending a “what’re you doing down there?” message instead, getting a “...you missing me? Patience, cariad...just sorting coffee...be up shortly...” in return.
He slumped back in his chair, jumping when Martha plonked herself in his lap. She soon had him chuckling at her tales of UNIT incompetence and when the desserts arrived ten minutes later he realised that Ianto was still absent. He shuffled Martha off his lap and stood, determined this time to go and find his Welshman, turning round to be greeted with the mouth-watering sight of Ianto in his UNIT uniform, the young man winking at him as he walked past, sending a cheeky “...close your mouth, Jack!” as he headed towards the Doctor.
He stopped in front of the Timelord and tugged him to his feet, wrapping him in his arms and pressing a warm kiss to his lips, surprised when he was kissed back. He released him, grinning, to cheers from their companions although Ianto could hear Jack spluttering in his head!
“You look gorgeous!” Martha was most impressed to see her wedding gift so perfectly displayed. She grinned at Jack, “I can see the attraction...” laughing when he growled “Hands off, he’s mine!” at her.
Ianto chuckled. “We’ve been teasing the Doctor all week with promises of this uniform so as it’s his last night for a while...” He sauntered back to his place at the table and slid into it, catching Jack’s gaze and there was no mistaking the look in those blue grey pools, wantwantwant blazing out of them. He picked up his spoon and dug into his blueberry ice cream, sucking the dessert suggestively off the spoon, his eyes fixed on his Captain’s. “Eat your ice cream, Jack, that’s an order...I’ll need help making the coffee...”
Laughter echoed around the table, good friends, tales of Torchwood and travels shared as the sun disappeared off the horizon and the distant stars flickered in the sky. Once the waiters had cleared away the dishes and left, Ianto stood up casually and headed for the stairs...”I’ll just go sort out the coffee then...” he disappeared down to the suite below.
Jack stood, “I’ll...er...help!” he said as everyone burst out laughing. He grinned...”coffee might be a while..!” as he vanished down the stairs after his gorgeous Welshman.
When the ladies crept down the stairs five minutes later the coffee was indeed brewing and Ianto had Jack pressed up against the wall as he kissed him into oblivion, neither man noticing the quiet clicks of four mobile phones as the moment was captured for posterity...
