Chapter 25d
In the hub, John joined Jack as he said farewell to Gray, safely frozen in his cryo-chamber. “My whole life I was looking for him, now I have to lose him all over again...”
John planted his hands on his hips. “You cryo-freeze him and what, wake him up in a hundred years and he’s all better? You know that’s not going to happen...maybe killing him would be the release he needs...”No! I killed him once...I can save him...he’s safe here...
“There’s been enough death!” through gritted teeth.
“You didn’t struggle – when I buried you...like you were allowing it?” John was curious
“It was my penance...” he gazed down at the peaceful face of his brother. I can protect you now...
John moved closer. “It’s not your fault” he said softly
Jack looked at him, disbelieving, before turning back to Gray and leaning in to press a kiss to his frozen forehead. He activated a button on his wrist strap and the chamber lid closed, the unit sliding back into the wall. He closed the door, crouching down as he rested his head against the cool surface. Goodbye Gray... He stood, turning to face John. “Need any help with those rift predictions?”
“No, so much of this planet I haven’t seen...you seem to like it...thought I might take a look...see you around ” He stepped closer and pressed a soft kiss on Jack’s cheek. “I’m sorry...for your losses...” He turned away, walking lightly up the stairs, leaving Jack in quiet contemplation. Tosh...Owen...I can’t believe that you’ve gone...
Ianto growled. I still hate him, the tear tracks plain to see on his face. He watched himself, carefully completing Owen’s final log-out procedure, eyes brimming with unshed tears as Jack packed away the last of Owen’s belongings into a secure storage box, his tears falling freely.
At Tosh’s work station, Gwen was doing the same with Tosh’s belongings, sobbing as she folded her glasses and placed them gently into the box along with her treasured photos...
Ianto was now processing Tosh’s log-out, startled when a video appeared on the screen in front of him – Tosh was saying goodbye in her own inimitable way. Jack and Gwen joined him to watch...”Jack...you saved me, you showed me all the wonders of the universe and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world...thank you...Owen – you never knew – I love you, all of you and I hope I did good...” Jack nodded, a watery smile curving his lips. He reached an arm around the two stood either side of him as Tosh vanished from the screen. Goodbye Tosh...Owen...we’ll never forget you...
“Now we carry on...”
“I don’t think I can...not after this...” Gwen sobbed.
“You can - we all can...the end is where we start from...” we have to go on...to make their sacrifice count...
The sky reverted to the familiar velvet black, the soft twinkling of distant galaxies soothing their frayed nerves as the Doctor opened the sky to the Ood song and its haunting ethereal sound filled his mind space. They stood in silence, Ianto wrapped around Jack, holding him tightly as the beauty of the song gently washed away the grief and sadness, bringing Jack back to him...he tightened his hold as he felt his Captain slumping in his arms, his shields lowering to bare the open raw wounds of endless death...of loss and guilt and failure...
The Doctor stood and watched discretely as Ianto took each broken piece of the man he loved and painstakingly and tenderly put him back together again, soothing the joins with gentle kisses and whispered words of love...it was beautiful – both heartbreaking and joyous at the same time and he was filled anew with wonder at the depth of the connection between these two incredible men...men he was proud to call his friends...as he withdrew from his mind space to leave them alone.
Jack lost himself in the intensity of feelings that radiated from his Welshman, wrapping them around him like a blanket, creating a protective barrier between him and the agony of the memory just shared. They stood with foreheads pressed together, eyes closed and arms wound tightly...keeping them close...safe...
“Thank you...” the barely audible whisper was heartfelt.
“Always, cariad...timeless...”
“...and eternal...” Jack captured his mouth, softly, delighting in the feel of his lips responsive under his own, the kiss sweet and tender. Pulling away gently, he cupped Ianto’s cheek and gazed into his eyes, gasping at the love that blazed in their depths... “Take me back now...show me I’m alive...”
Moments later they were back in real time and crushing their mouths together, kissing hungrily, pent up emotions raging through minds and bodies, hands raking urgently over clothes, tugging t-shirts from jeans to slide underneath, desperate to feel the touch of warm skin...tiny gasps lost as desire mounted...
The Doctor closed his eyes and shut out the sight and sounds beside him, looking back over the week – was it really just a week since the ceremony? He scrolled through the memories they’d relived and marvelled at how far they’d all come...himself included...Rose...he smiled, she’d always be with him...
He opened his eyes to find Jack and Ianto gazing at him with indulgent grins on their faces...oh, they’d all come a very long way and he really was going to miss them...
